Cody Ackland graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2016 and completed his articles in 2017 under the tutelage of Darin Sprake, Daniel Song and Anna Konye. He has been an associate lawyer since his call to the Bar in June of 2017.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Carleton University in 2012, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in History with Highest Honours, as well as a minor in Legal Studies. After graduating from Carleton, Cody worked with the Health Branch of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. In this role, he coordinated the sharing of medical information between federal and provincial health authorities and managed the organization and delivery of medical information for thousands of high-risk refugees from Nepal, Bangladesh and Thailand. His proficiency in the French language allowed him to liaise effectively with various government departments.

While enrolled in law school at the University of Alberta, Cody took on the role of Criminal Law Project Dayleader with Student Legal Services of Edmonton. In this capacity, he was responsible for managing the files of nearly 100 individuals who had been charged with criminal offences. As a result, Cody gained valuable courtroom experience early on in his legal career.

In his final year of law school, Cody was awarded with the Law Student Association’s Award for Student Leadership for his efforts at the faculty over his three-year attendance there. He was the team captain for the Litigators hockey team, coach of the women’s Swift Justice hockey team, volunteered as a moot mentor and also regularly hosted pub trivia nights.

Cody sits on the Student Legal Services Board of Directors, and has been Vice-Chair of the Board since 2019. In this role, Cody oversees the governance of Student Legal Services, liaises with the Provincial Court and Judiciary, and advocates for effective and necessary innovations for the benefit of the organization. Cody is also currently a member of the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association of Alberta. Cody has appeared in trial courts across Alberta, as well as in Saskatchewan. He has also successfully argued before the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Outside of the courtroom, Cody can be found golfing or chasing around his dog Summit. Cody loves to spend time outdoors, and maintains an interest in mechanical projects. This is due in part to his former role as the Director of Operations of the National Capital Kart Club which saw him organize go-kart racing events throughout the Ottawa Region. Cody’s passion for tools has also been nurtured by his cherished position at Canadian Tire, where he worked from 2004-2014 as a Sales Associate and Team Leader.

Cody’s background, passion for the law and commitment to justice allow him to be an ardent and effective advocate for his clients. Cody’s nature and experiences have provided him with a profound ability to connect with people and to provide comfort and confidence to clients often facing severe upheaval in their lives. Cody would value the opportunity to utilize these skills to assist you with any legal issues you may be facing, whether criminal, regulatory, or disciplinary.
